End-of-Summer Administrative Hours

Our Summer Intensive  and regular office hours will be coming to a close on Thursday, August 12.  The SA office will be closed from Friday, August 13th until Friday, September 17th while we do some end-of-year cleaning, relaxing, and traveling.  Regular office hours (Mon-Thu from 10-6) will resume on Monday, September 20 with the start of our Fall Enrollment Week.

Please read on to learn more about upcoming changes to the Afterschool Program this fall!

Thank you for a wonderful 2010 Summer Intensive!

Starting Artists trip to Brooklyn MuseumStudents at this year’s Summer Intensive completed incredible projects in art & design, including: photography, silkscreening, graphic design, animation, decoupage, stop-motion animation, layout design, & more, bringing many professional tools to their already strong passion for self-expression.

Students also visited a NYC cultural institution each week – a special thanks to our hosts at WABC, the Smack Mellon Gallery in DUMBO, the Brooklyn Museum and its teen Museum Apprentices, Martha Graham Dance in Manhattan, and The Art Library in Red Hook!

With so many friendships to make & inspiring projects to complete, it’s no wonder that one student remarked, “When I come here, I feel like an artist – like I can do anything and nothing is impossible.”

Exciting Changes to the Afterschool Program

Afterschool April 2010

Starting Artists is pleased to announce some changes in the way that we will be running our Afterschool Program this fall!

First & foremost, we will offer the Afterschool Program to ages 10 – 19. We offer a warm welcome to our new 10 and 11 year-olds! The community asked for it, and we are happy to deliver.

Further, building on the success of the Summer Intensive’s structure, we will pilot a new Afterschool structure. During an Enrollment Week at the end of September, Students (ages 10 – 14) will sign up to participate at SA and will pay a sliding-scale fee while teens aged 14 – 19 may sign up as Interns who mentor the younger students on a work-study basis.

We will continue to offer one free drop-in day every week, clubs like the Creative Entrepreneurs Club and the Girls Club, and special workshops like always. Keep checking the website for details and email Lacey with questions or to secure a spot today.

Thank you to our intern Susan and ABC-NY!

This summer, SA has been lucky to host a full-time college intern, Susan, through the Multicultural Arts Management Program of the Arts & Business Council of NY. Created to promote diversity in the nonprofit arts sector and art management careers, this  program matches qualified interns with arts organizations around NYC.  A big THANK YOU to Susan for all of her hard work & dedication this summer!  Best of luck next year at Brown University!
